Dreamer/Writer : Same Difference?

What do you want to be when you grow up?

The single most important question a child can be asked. We are told, the sky is the limit. We can be whatever we want to be and do whatever our heart desires. Although true that with enough perseverance we can accomplish our goals, I feel like some dreams are harder to attain.

My Idol!
Some kids want to be doctors or lawyers, veterinarians or firefighters, while all of those are admirable goals; I have always wanted to be a writer. But not just any writer... when asked what I wanted to be when I grew up my answer was always...J.K. Rowling. My ambitions were received with a chuckle. It was like saying I wanted to be a Supermodel (I'm only 5'3" so that would have never worked out anyways) or an International Super Spy; 1 in a million. And I didn't/don't want to be J.K. Rowling because of the money, accolades or movies rights but because I am jealous of her muse's energy, her endless creativity, her power to put words together and create masterpieces. According to google there are 1,084,170 words in the Harry Potter Series while I'm sitting here struggling to hit 55k.
Happy 9th Anniversary Deathly Hallows!

Since it's tough out there in the publishing world, I think it is very important to create a community. Boost each other up to reach the stars. We have chosen a path less traveled by and hope that after all the blood, sweat and tears that it makes all the difference. I know that I go through periods of time where I am on top of the world, I look at my novel in progress and think Damn I'm good. Then other times I want to throw it away and grieve the last 2 years wasted. I love being on Social Media because I've received nothing but love from people going through the exact same things. I appreciate all the kind words and the support. It gave me the idea to introduce Author Spotlight on my blog to continue to bring together our community. I have a growing list of writers and can't wait to share their journeys with you.

About Author Spotlight

I wanted to do something to help my fellow writers because us creative types have to stick together. "Author Spotlight" helps build a platform for new writers, but also gives an inside look at publishing and the writing process to aspiring writers. I am going to feature writers of all genres, traditional or indie published. If you are interested email me: CherylaMontgomery1@gmail.com

Charlotte Hains is an amazing author that I am going to interview and review for my author spotlight. This book is a bit naughty but is welcomed since I have lived in the YA world for quite sometime. She said that I could share the code for a FREE e-copy of INTRODUCING CHARLOTTE.

All that we ask is after you read, if you could please post a thoughtful review on Smashwords and give my blog a shout out.

That's all for now! I've had a busy week with 3 birthdays, a sick kid and editing QtU.  I will leave you with the roller coaster of emotions involved with being a writer, as told by Rapunzel. I hope you all have an AWESOME week. XoXo- Cheryl

  1. Haha. Agree with you. J.K.Rowling is an idol for many. But how many of those have actually able to transform themselves into a better writer is the question!
About you though, I am happy to say that you are progressing weeK by week. And 55k? Wow!
Anyways, thanks for the post, & you too have a great week ahead. Cheers! :)

  2. Doug and I are writing a blog about coming out of the caves into the up-top world, and we've finished putting it in a print book and eventually we'll make it an e-book. It was a little hard finishing because Doug was killed and he couldn't write in first person anymore so I took over writing the blog, but that's a problem because I'm an imaginary person. Yeah, I've always wanted to be J.K.Rowling, but that will be difficult unless some magic can make me into a real person. Right now I'm just a character in the blog.

  3. Hey Cheryl,

I think it's important we have that figure to look up to. Mine was Stephen King, still is. I'm convinced he's the reason I enjoy voice based writing with character driven plots.

If we don't have anyone to look up to, then where to we go?

    Hope your child feels better,
    Till next time,
    Kevin

    1. Stephen King is pretty awesome too . It's to true that we need role models to look up to. Thanks for your well wishes. It's been a rough couple weeks. I appreciate your support. Thanks for stopping by.

  4. I hear you. It seems easier now to write something and publish it in some form than it used to before the past couple decades. Computers made writing so infinitely easier.

    1. I totally agree. It is much easier to get published but marketing now is all your own. Social media taking over the world.

I appreciate your support and your willingness to stop by. Hope you have an enjoyable weekend.

  5. J.K. Rowling is one of my many many literary inspirations and Idols. Others include, Colin Forbes, Mark Walden and Matthew Reilly.

I to agree with you, while I acknowledge there accomplishments, I idolise the depth of their imagination. In creating some of the great characters, who form so much of the foundation of my literally journey, from a young lad who detested everything about reading. Who in the sixth grade lacked the capacity to read. To a lad who adores everything about the written word. Not just novels, but the great speeches, poems and lyrics I have come to appreciate.

So thank you for this wonderful post.

It has inspired my next one! :)

    1. Thank you Brinway for stopping by. I will have to check out some of your literary idols. I'm glad I could inspire your next post. At the moment, I could use some inspiration myself. I am dragging my feet "pre-editing" before I send my manuscript to my editor. I think it is because of the uncertainty that comes next. If you have a moment please respond with your blog site so I can check it out. I appreciate the support and hope you have a good night (or day depending where you are).

    2. First my blog site. http://brinways.blogspot.com.au/

Secondly, I completely agree. The uncertainty from finishing a manuscript is extremely intimidating. For me its so hard to give up control. While you are still editing, you control everything, but once you submit your manuscript. It is in the hands of others. And that is never easy.

    3. I will keep my eye on your blog. I think you are such a talented writer. I would love to give it a shout out in one of my upcoming blogs if you don't mind.

I think that is the problem, giving up control. It is a story really personal to me. I don't know if you read my blog titled Tis But a Dream, the premise of my book is based on a friend and have a lot of pressure to do his memory justice. I guess I just have to take the plunge! =P
